It’s been four years since Hewlett Packard Enterprise debuted its ambitious GreenLake hybrid cloud initiative, in which CEO Anthony Neri promised to deliver literally everything the company does as a service. With the new GreenLake offerings coming out of its Las Vegas user conference this week, the company is getting close.
The list of new GreenLake offerings being announced at HPE Discover 2023 today is long and varied. HPE is rolling out new GreenLake offerings for machine learning and generative AI, support for running Kubernetes distributions from Red Hat and AWS on GreenLake, and new VMware integrations.
You will find new backup and networking-as-a service offerings on the lake that is green. And if you have a hankering for private cloud, it’ll take you mere hours to get up and running in a private GreenLake cloud running in a “pre-caged” Equinix data center.
HPE also is putting the “green” into GreenLake with a new environmental sustainability dashboard. And with its OpsRamp acquisition now done, HPE has fully integrated its AIOps capabilities into its GreenLake collection, giving customers better situational awareness of what exactly is going on under the covers of their complex, containerized and hybridized IT environments.
These new offerings mark the progress that HPE has made with its GreenLake initiatives, said Fidelma Russo, HPE Global CTO.

“In 2019 at HPE Discover, we committed to delivering our entire portfolio as a service by 2022,” Russo said in a press conference last week. “With that, we committed to a platform-based architecture and offers that go across both technology…and offers for partners and emerging into other new areas. We really have been executing along this vision and I hope that you will see the next step in the evolution of” the HPE Discover 2023 announcements.
Here’s more info on the new GreenLake offerings announced today at HPE Discovery 2023:
The new GreenLake for Large Language Models will give customers the capability to tap into the power of generative AI. Delivered in partnership with the German AI startup Aleph Alpha, the GreenLake for LLM offering will ship with Luminous, a pre-trained LLM that allows cusotmesr to build generative AI applications atop their own data. It supports English, Frensch, German, Italian, and Spanish, HPE says.
GreenLake for LLM is a “field-proven and ready-to-use” offering that will “support AI and HPC jobs on hundreds of thousands of CPUs or GPUs at once,” the company said in a press release. The company is also launching an offering called HPE Machine Learning Development Environment, which is available through the GreenLake for High Performance Computing (HPC) product. As the economic expansion slows and enterprises become more cost-conscious, private cloud offerings are seeing an uptick in interest. HPE cites a study from Constellation Research that found companies that adopted a private cloud model cut costs by 50% and realized up to 65% better performance for private cloud workloads compared to public clouds.
GreenLake Private Cloud is getting updates too
To that end, HPE has done quite a bit to bolster its private cloud offerings on GreenLake. The big news this week is the launch of GreenLake Private Cloud Business Edition, which allows users to spin up and manage virtual machines running across hybrid clouds on demand. This offering provides AIOps and data protection capabilities for VMs running on-prem or in the public cloud. HPE is supporting AWS first, Russo said, with support for other cloud providers to follow.
It also expanded its support for containers running on-prem or in the public cloud with HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Enterprise, which it says will help customers with distributed deployments on the edge.
Many organizations have standardized on different Kubernetes runtimes and associated toolchains, and HPE wants to be support those technology decisions, said Bryan Thompson, vice president of HPE GreenLake Cloud Services Solutions.
“We of course provide support for our HPE Ezmeral Kubernetes, which is a CNCF-compliant Kubernetes runtime,” Thompson said during last week’s press conference. “But we’ve added additional support for things like Amazon EKS Anywhere, the same underlying Kubernetes that you’d run in the Amazon Web Services public cloud. You can now run that Kubernetes runtime here within your private cloud. We’re extending that also with Red Hat Open Shift…Now this can be a fully integrated component of their private cloud experience.”
Finally, the company is expanding its GreenLake for VMWare Cloud Foundation (VCF); new networking capabilities from its partner Aruba Networking to provide networking as a service; and support for Microsoft SQL Server and Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) in GreenLake for Backup and Recovery.
HPE Discover 2023 runs through Thursday.
