Forget Shopping Mall Santa–in 2024, folks who crave a conversation with the big guy but who don’t want to travel outside the home can now chat with AI Santa, an interactive experience powered by cutting edge AI models.
AI Santa provides a way for children of all ages to have a video call with a digital recreation of Santa Claus, the legendary Christmas figure also known as Saint Nick. Participants can make requests, such as sharing their wish list, or asking whether they are on the naughty or nice list, and AI Santa will respond in real time, just like the real Santa would.
During this reporter’s five-minute conversation, AI Santa was able to answer in-depth technical questions, such as what AI technology do you use (Tavus’ Conversational Video Interface), are the elves utilizing agentic AI tech (no), and what does Mrs. Claus think of being married to an AI (she’s in full support).
Video AI has been all the rage, as market-leading companies have released new AI models that generate video based on text inputs, such as OpenAI’s Sora and Google’s Gemini2. But the AI developed by Tavus works a little bit differently. It developed its Phoenix models to create digital twins of existing people using voice- and face-cloning techniques. The question-and-answering portion of the final experience is handled through large language models (LLMs).
According to Tavus, AI Santa demonstrates the potential of its CVI for use in real-world applications, such as healthcare, education, and customer service (not that Santa isn’t real). AI Santa also speaks more than 30 different languages, showing the sort of range that Old Saint Nick is globally known for.
AI Santa did demonstrate some glitches when asked how he handles AI hallucinations, but he took it all in good stride. “Haaaaaaaaaaaallucinations can be a challenge but I’ve been designed to recognize and handle them,” he said. “If I start to get off track, I can always rely on my training data and the guidance of the Tavus technology to get back on course….Keep being curious and asking great questions.”
Interested parties can play around with AI Santa here: https://santa.tavus.io/. And developers who want to incorporate the open source AI Santa code into their own apps can check out the AI Santa repo on GitHub.
